One of my hobbies involves
the long distance reception of television
stations. This is a list of stations that I have received here in
Smithfield, NC. The Smithfield area is in range during sporadic E-skip
of stations from Canada, and part of the Carribean, as well as a large
part of the United States. We also often experience tropospheric
bending (a lower atmospheric refraction) which allows reception of
stations over hundreds of miles. The E-skip (refraction of TV signals by the ionesphere) only happens occasionally (sporadic). It is more like during peaks in the sun spot cycle, every 11 years, and may be linked to strong thunderstorms that produce a type of lightning that may affect the upper atmosphere (sprites). Tropospheric bending occurs when humidity is high near the ground or during temperature inversions. It's most common during warmer months.
